Bold headline: A frightening morning in Edinburgh as stabbings spark a city-wide lockdown and a suspect barricades inside a tower block.
Two people are in hospital and a suspect has barricaded himself inside a tower block following reports of stabbings in Edinburgh. Armed police have sealed off the Calders area after a man who appeared to be wielding two knives attacked several people. The scene is unfolding with multiple emergency services on site: at least four fire engines, several ambulances, and around 20 police vehicles.
The incident centers on the Calder Gardens neighbourhood in the city’s western side, adjacent to Wester Hailes High School, which, along with nurseries and Council buildings, has been placed on lockdown. A police cordon surrounds Cobbinshaw House, the property where the suspect is believed to be.
Video clips circulating online show a man in a light-colored top carrying a large knife, and damage seen at a nearby shop. A similar description was later observed looking out from Cobbinshaw House windows.
Chief Inspector Scott Kennedy commented: “The disturbance in the Calder area is now contained and there is no believed wider risk to the public. The incident is not being treated as terror-related.” He added that officers remain on the scene as inquiries continue and urged anyone with information to contact police on 101.
Local residents react with concern. William Ramsay, who lives nearby, suggested the suspect had entered his building’s stairwell, damaged a local shop, and may have stabbed two people (unconfirmed). He noted armed police and police dogs had been present for several hours. Another resident, Abigail Clegg, said the man tried to reach the school and nursery before being chased away, then moved on to the shop, where he allegedly assaulted workers with a knife.
Transport updates: Lothian Buses has diverted its number 20 service away from the area until further notice.
Council and emergency services response: A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson said they are supporting Police Scotland and have closed nearby public buildings, including schools and early years centres, per police guidance. They aim to reopen soon and are keeping parents and residents updated. Anyone with information or concerns is urged to contact the police on 101.
The Scottish Ambulance Service reported responding to Calder Gardens at 08:34, dispatching three ambulances, three paramedic response units, and a special operations response team. Two patients were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.
This event has understandably unsettled the local community. As investigations progress, officers will remain in the area. If you have information that could assist, please reach out to the police on 101.
Thought-provoking note: With incidents like this, public safety hinges on rapid police containment, clear communication, and community vigilance.
