James Gunn Clarifies DCU Superman TV Show Details
In a recent development, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has addressed the rumors surrounding the upcoming Superman TV show in the DC Universe. The project, which has been a topic of speculation since the release of the Superman movie, is set to explore the world of the Man of Steel beyond the big screen.
On November 10, 2025, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that a Jimmy Olsen-centric series was in the works. However, reports from Variety and Deadline quickly clarified that the project was actually titled 'DC Crime'. James Gunn, the filmmaker behind the Superman movie, took to Threads to set the record straight. He stated, 'Just a heads-up, there has never been a project titled 'DC Crime' in development. I don't know where that rumor came from, but it's a bit odd.'
Gunn also addressed the speculation, adding, 'No, that doesn't mean the rest of the story is false.' While he hasn't revealed the actual title of the Jimmy Olsen show, it's known that American Vandal's Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda will write and executive produce the series, which will be an HBO Max original. The show is expected to involve the Daily Planet characters, excluding David Corenswet's Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane. So far, Skylar Gisondo is the only confirmed cast member, reprising his role as the DC photographer.
The spinoff series is set to center on Jimmy Olsen and other Daily Planet staff members, tackling 'cases involving super-powered villains'. The iconic Flash villain, Gorilla Grodd, is set to be the main antagonist in the first season. The show's potential impact on upcoming DCU movies remains uncertain, as it depends on the production timeline and release schedule.
DCU's Chapter 1: 'Gods and Monsters' is also in development, with Corenswet and Brosnahan returning as Superman and Lois, and Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor. The next major project, HBO's Lanterns TV show, is set to premiere in early 2026, while Supergirl is set for release on June 26, followed by Clayface on September 11. The release date, runtime, director, writers, producers, and distributor details for the Superman TV show are yet to be announced.
