At 35, Johann Zarco, the oldest rider in MotoGP, is contemplating an extended stay in the premier class beyond 2027. Despite initially believing his 2024 move to LCR Honda would be his last MotoGP contract, Zarco found new life in the challenge.
Zarco, the top RCV rider for the past two seasons, has had an impressive run. He secured an emotional win at his home race in Le Mans, a dry podium finish at Silverstone, and even defended Honda's Suzuka 8 Hours title. These achievements led to a two-year contract extension with HRC, which Zarco currently views as his last in the premier class.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Zarco's mindset has evolved. When he signed in 2023, he thought 2025 would be his swansong. However, the renewed energy from the new challenge prompted him to consider two more years. And now, he teases, "maybe now I will have another breath, a third one! You never know." Zarco believes his experience and attention to detail can still make a difference in this highly technical sport.
The main attraction of Zarco's future contract with LCR is equal access to new parts simultaneously with the official HRC team. Zarco aims to have the bike at the same level as the factory riders throughout the year. He's prepared to adapt if the factory team gains a slight edge.
In the 2024 world championship, Zarco finished twelfth, just six points ahead of HRC's Luca Marini. Joan Mir, the other Honda rider to podium, placed 15th overall. For the 2026 season, Zarco will welcome a new teammate, reigning Moto2 champion Diogo Moreira, who will replace Somkiat Chantra.
