Major League Baseball's offseason is heating up, and the Detroit Tigers are making moves! They've already snagged former Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen, and now they're reportedly in talks with another familiar face: free-agent pitcher Lucas Giolito.
According to a report by Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Tigers are actively pursuing Giolito, a right-handed starter. Giolito, who is 31 years old, signed with the Red Sox in January 2024. Unfortunately, an elbow injury sidelined him for the entire 2024 season. However, he bounced back strong in 2025, going 10-4 with a 3.41 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP, and an impressive 121 strikeouts across 145 innings pitched in 26 starts. That's a solid performance!
The report from The Athletic indicates that the Tigers are exploring their options in the starting pitching market, also considering other free agents like Chris Bassitt. But here's where it gets controversial: the Tigers' ability to sign Giolito or other pitchers might depend on the outcome of their arbitration case with left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal. If they lose the case and end up paying Skubal $32 million instead of $19 million, it could impact their budget for other acquisitions.
Adding to the intrigue, the New York Yankees are also reportedly interested in Giolito. A deal with either the Tigers or the Yankees would be a reunion of sorts for Giolito. If he joins the Tigers, he'd be reunited with former high school teammate Jack Flaherty. If he signs with the Yankees, he'd be playing alongside another former teammate, lefty Max Fried.
What do you think of the Tigers' moves? Will Giolito be a good fit? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Do you think the Yankees or Tigers are the best fit for Giolito? What impact will Skubal's arbitration case have on the Tigers' offseason strategy?
