The world of darts saw some thrilling action on day two of the PDC World Championship, with former champion Rob Cross and rising star Ryan Searle making a strong start. It's a sport of precision, strategy, and mental fortitude, and this year's competition is already proving to be a rollercoaster of emotions.
Rob Cross, who famously won the championship on his debut back in 2018 at the Alexandra Palace, is back in the spotlight. After a challenging year that saw him slip to 17th in the world rankings, Cross showed he's still a force to be reckoned with. He dominated his first-round match against Norway's Cor Dekker, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Cross's performance was a mix of brilliance and resilience. He started strong, averaging close to 100 in the first set. Although his performance dipped slightly in the second, he managed to pull through, winning from a two-leg deficit. Dekker, on the other hand, struggled with his doubles, which is a crucial aspect of the game. Cross, however, was incredibly precise on the doubles, especially in the initial sets, and finished the match in style by hitting the 'big fish' – a 170 checkout. His final stats included an average of 90.84 and a checkout success rate of 47.4%.
"I was a bit edgy today but to finish with that one, I've been doing that all week," Cross told Sky Sports. "I'm really proud of myself and there's a lot more in the tank yet. I think I'll be better in the next game - I feel like I'm back. If I play my best stuff, I've definitely got a chance."
Next up for Cross is a match against Ian White, who managed to overcome Mervyn King with a score of 3-2.
In another exciting development, 20th seed Ryan Searle swiftly defeated Chris Landman of the Netherlands with a 3-0 victory, showcasing his prowess by hitting five 180s during the match.
In the opening match of the day, Niels Zonneveld from the Netherlands triumphed over Haupai Puha of New Zealand with a 3-0 win.
Here's a recap of the afternoon session results:
- Niels Zonneveld 3-0 Haupai Puha
